Festivals and tills: tax checks reach Garfagnana’s village celebrations
September 2023 reports document objections concerning cash registers. Income and the destination of funds require separate scrutiny.
In August 2023, Guardia di Finanza checks also reached festivals in the Mediavalle and Garfagnana. In a 5 September article by Luca Tronchetti, Il Tirreno reports two events organised by sports associations found without cash registers, and administrative fines between €1,000 and €4,000. The same report specifies that the other festivals inspected had the equipment and that no objections had arisen over health matters or municipal authorisations.
On the same day, La Nazione reports a wider provincial picture: around 285 tax checks and seven failures to install fiscal recording equipment, five linked to festivals in Garfagnana. These figures cover different scopes and should not be added together.
The issue concerns the tax management of food and drink service, rather than every volunteer’s good faith. The sources consulted do not identify the organisers fined, publish their accounts or document judgments or money laundering. Understanding how much remained in the community requires financial reporting: income, costs and the use of any surplus. Cash-register objections alone do not answer that question.

Checks reported by two newspapers. The original Guardia di Finanza statement was not located; names, inspection reports and subsequent outcomes are not published. Counts cover different scopes. The €150,000 figure mentioned by Il Tirreno was not used: it does not document individual festivals’ income or tax evasion.
