Viareggio sand bypass: work resumes on the harbour pipeline

Seven million euros in regional investment; completion expected in early 2027.

Work on the sand bypass pipeline at Viareggio harbour has resumed after the summer break. Regional minister Filippo Boni inspected the assembly of two pipes, each around 600 metres long, which will be installed beneath the harbour using directional drilling. Toscana Notizie reports total regional investment of €7 million. The project aims to reduce silting at the harbour entrance and use the intercepted sand to replenish the western beach. Completion is expected in early 2027, subject to unforeseen problems and adverse weather. The inspection therefore documents a construction phase, rather than the system entering service.
