Tuscany, from near and far.
A newspaper about Tuscany, bringing together those who live here, those who have left and those who have made it their home. With the region’s future at heart.
Our perspective
La Contrada sets out to tell Tuscany’s stories through the eyes of Tuscans in Italy and abroad, and international residents who have made the region their home. Distance can help us compare experiences; proximity helps us understand what changes in everyday life. We want to bring both perspectives together.
Where is the region heading?
We follow local politics, changes in towns and villages, work, the environment and the use of public resources, with particular attention to Maremma and the province of Siena. We are interested in decisions and their consequences: who makes them, whose interests are involved, who bears the costs and what communities gain.
The question at the heart of our work is simple: where is the region heading, and who has a say in its future?
A method before a position
Our approach is to examine and verify: read public records, follow the money, and compare statements with results. Investigative reporting requires documents and corroboration; a controversy alone does not establish wrongdoing. Recognising what works is part of that same commitment.
The archive contains original editorial summaries, with attribution and links to sources. We distinguish announcements, approved decisions, completed work and open questions; views, estimates and allegations are attributed to those making them. These summaries do not imply independent interviews or on-the-ground reporting. Historical dates remain visible in the English versions too.
Two languages, one region
We publish in Italian and English to make local news accessible to people whose experience of Tuscany is lived in another language. The IT / EN switch takes you between editions while keeping you on the same page. Linked sources remain in the language of the original document.
Our origins
La Contrada brings together ideas, research and editorial projects gathered over the past three years, now taking shape as a bilingual newspaper about Tuscany. The archive looks back at the region’s events and documents: source dates indicate when events occurred or were reported, rather than how long the newspaper has existed.
Why La Contrada?
A contrada is more than a neighbourhood: it is a place, a community and a sense of belonging. Our name reflects a region shaped by its people, their relationships and the choices they share, even when members of that community live far away.
