Festival funds: Ascom and Confesercenti ask twenty-eight mayors for scrutiny

The 2024 letter proposes a commission examining purposes, local effects and the destination of funds raised.

It is not only about duration and menus: in a letter to the province’s twenty-eight mayors, Confcommercio and Confesercenti Grosseto also ask for checks on where money raised by festivals ends up. Published on 14 March 2024, the statement is signed by directors Gabriella Orlando and Andrea Biondi. The associations ask whether municipalities have updated regulations and propose a commission to examine initiatives’ purposes, local effects, impact on businesses and actual use of resources. They object to events founded to promote traditions and products becoming predominantly commercial occasions. Yet the same statement recognises festivals’ role in sustaining social life in inland and isolated communities. The document sets out requests and assessments by restaurant-sector representatives: it does not publish comprehensive festival accounts or demonstrate misappropriation or irregular use of proceeds. The documented point is a demand for checks and transparency, rather than an already established offence.
