Marrucheti tortelli seizure: Pesucci defends volunteers as illness remains unexplained
The mayor identifies the festival after inspections. Blocking the food does not establish a link with the suspected foodborne illness.
The seizure of around 11,000 tortelli during a Maremma festival concerns Marrucheti, in the municipality of Campagnatico. Mayor Elismo Pesucci publicly identified the event in a statement reported by MaremmaOggi on 2 September 2026. The previous day, La Nazione had reported local health authority checks following a report of suspected foodborne illness, and food stored at non-compliant temperatures because of a faulty refrigerator. In his subsequent statement, Pesucci described precautionary destruction of the batch and said the festival had continued normally. The mayor attributes the fault to exceptional heat: this is his account, rather than a technical conclusion established here. The measure concerning the food and the illness remain separate issues: the sources do not establish a causal relationship. Pesucci also rejects generalisations against associations and volunteers. The sources cited here do not report laboratory results or health findings that would justify presenting the episode as poisoning caused by the tortelli.
