Pine tortoise scale: demarcated area exceeds 56,000 hectares as response is debated

The figure includes the buffer zone. Marras looks to biological control; Petrucci criticises measures.

The pine tortoise scale emergency in coastal pinewoods in the Pisa area was discussed in council following a question from Diego Petrucci of Fratelli d’Italia. Regional minister Leonardo Marras reported that, according to May estimates, the demarcated area exceeded 56,000 hectares across thirteen municipalities: the figure includes confirmed outbreaks and a five-kilometre buffer zone. He cited spending of more than €350,000 on trunk-injection treatment and removal of damaged trees, noting authorisation difficulties for biological control. Petrucci challenged the response’s effectiveness and called for stronger engagement with the ministry and relevant institutes.
